Classroom Newsletter 2/24/17

News & Announcements
from Mrs. Rogers’ Kindergarten
February 24, 2017

WOW! It’s hard to believe that our February vacation is already here! We have had many busy weeks in kindergarten. The children have certainly earned their break!  J

SAVE THE DATE!!! One of our kindergarten traditions is to host a Mother’s Day breakfast. This year’s Mother’s Day breakfast will be Friday, May 12th. It will begin at 8:00 a.m. and will last about 1 ½ hours. Dads and other family members will be asked to help with preparations for this exciting and special event. Look for more information in upcoming newsletters!  J Please save the date moms!!

During the winter break, please be sure your child practices his/her reading, writing and math skills. One idea is to ask your child to locate and write known words around the house during vacation. Children love being “reading and writing detectives” and going on letter or word hunts in books and newspapers. Your child may choose to practice writing stories about their daily adventures during vacation. They are learning to tell a story with a beginning, middle and end using pictures and sentences. Please be sure to read, read, and read some more each day and talk about the characters and events of the stories together.

Your child is bringing home his/her book bag for vacation. There are at least 3 books and a “popcorn word” ring inside. Please listen to your child read these books throughout the week. They are very excited to share these books with you. Please return all of these materials to school on Wednesday, March 8th. We will continue to send books home during the rest of the school year.

For math, your child can practice writing numbers to 20. He/she can also spend time counting and should start and stop counting at random numbers between 0 and 100. Counting sets of objects in groups of tens and ones is also a great activity.

Most important, please have your child play every day!!!  Board games, dramatic play and Legos are all loved by each of the students in our class. They all enjoy doing crafts and are quite creative. I know each child would be delighted to play with you! Have fun together!! J

There are updates on our blog so please be sure to check it out! Here is the link http://mrsrogerssb.blogspot.com/. You can also subscribe to the blog to get an email each time it is updated. Enjoy!

I know the children are looking forward to a fantastic vacation. They all excited to spend time with their families and friends. I hope each and every one of you has a fabulous break! I can’t wait to see the children again on Wednesday, March 8th! J

Happy vacation!
J Nancy

February Farm to School

Today we made Gingered Cabbage Salad with Chef Anne and her assistant Michelle. Each child had a role in making the salad and gave it a try at the end of our lesson. See our results and the recipe below!

Author/illustrator Ashley Wolff's visit to kindergarten

Ashley Wolff came to visit kindergarten this morning! She is the illustrator for all of the Miss Bindergarten books. Ashley is also the author and illustrator of many other children's books such as the Baby Bear series and the Stella and Roy series.

Ashley talked to us about some words that are very important to her as an author and illustrator...passion, patience, practice, and perseverance. These words are also important in kindergarten!

We were so excited to get a sneak peek of Ashley Wolff's new book! It is called Where, Oh Where is Baby Bear. It is a wonderful book that uses many positional words such as behind, on top, and inside to describe where Baby Bear is hiding.

The children were delighted to watch Ashley draw pictures of bears for us to hang in the library for everyone in the school to enjoy!

Studying Force and Motion

We are scientists!

We are using balls and gutters to investigate force and motion.  Today we discovered that the steeper the gutter is, the faster the balls roll.
