Connecting Readers' Workshop and Explore Time!

One of our favorite familiar books is Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel by Virginia Lee Burton.  The main character, Mike Mulligan, has a steam shovel named Mary Anne.  He is proud of Mary Anne and "always said that she could dig as much in a day as a hundred men could dig in a week."  As the years passed, steam shovels were replaced with gasoline, electric and Diesel motor shovels.  There wasn't any work left for Mike and Mary Anne until one day they volunteered to dig the cellar of the new town hall in the town of Popperville.

Today during Explore time, the students used our big bin of wooden blocks to build their own town hall--just like Mike Mulligan and Mary Anne!  I love their creativity and connection to what we are learning in other parts of our day!

Partner Reading

Partner reading is one of our favorite parts of Readers' Workshop!  This week we learned about "WOW! pages" and shared these pages with our reading partner.  When partner reading, we sit side-by-side with one book in the middle.  We take turns reading and reread to learn more!

Our 2nd Farm to School lesson

This afternoon we had our second Farm to School lesson with Ms. Jennifer Sutton and Natalie, a UVM student.  We learned that there are many different types of kale including Dinosaur Kale!  After listening to a story, the class made kale pesto.  Each student had an important role in the creation of this delicious snack!

Food Play!

Today we enjoyed a presentation of Food Play.  The students LOVED the performance and learned a lot about healthy food choices.  We were most surprised to learn how much sugar there is in soda.  Special thanks to Hannaford supermarkets for bringing this wonderful presentation to Chamberlin School!
