Farm to School

Today was our last Farm to School lesson of kindergarten! We learned about vegetables that grow early in the spring. Some of the things we tasted were radishes, sorrel and edible flowers. One was spicy, others were sweet or salty, and one was lemony. One plant was so sour we all had to run to the sink to get a drink of water! All children were brave and tried a taste of the plants--even if it was just a lick!

We also got to explore soil. We learned that the darker the soil is the more nutrients there are in it!

Our Spring Trip to the Bread and Butter Farm

The students helped me write this blog post. They were very excited to tell you all about our trip to the Bread and Butter Farm.

Here is Farmer Corie showing us a cow skull. They found this skull on the farm when they moved there.

Mr. Chris sang us a song about our hands. We got to move around with him while we listened and sang.

We went with Farmer Corie to see the chickens. We helped her move the fence. There were a lot of directions to follow! We had to work together to get the fence in place in order to give the chickens more grass.

We chased the chickens and tried to pick them up.

Looking in the chicken coop for more chickens!

Many of us got to hold a chicken in our hands!

Farmer Corie showed us the cows in the pasture.

We planted our own basil with Farmer Bekah. We went in the greenhouse and tasted some leafy vegetables and herbs.

Farmer Henry took us to see his milking cows. We got to pet a cow named Green Bay. We learned that you can hear a cow's heart beating when you put your ear next to the triangle space on the side of a cow. We also learned that a cow has FOUR stomachs!

We had lots of fun at the Bread and Butter Farm! Maybe we will see each other at Burger Night this summer!!

Thank you for letting us come back!!

Reading with 1st graders

Mrs. Routhier's first graders wrote "All About" books during their Writers' Workshop. They came to visit us this morning to share their books with us! When they finished reading to us, we shared our writing with them. We enjoyed spending time with our first grade buddies!
